ASPCA Pet of the Week: Queen for a Day

cat

Looking for a regal bee? Meet Queenie—she’s a 9-year-old lassie who’s extra friendly and lovable. Her get-along personality and even temperament make her an ideal match for someone looking for a sweet sidekick.

“Queenie has two tricks that she performs,” says Barbara MacDonald, ASPCA Volunteer Coordinator. “She jumps on your shoulder when you open her habitat door, and then she wants to sit on your lap on the floor. Her behavioral repertoire never varies!”

This little cuddle-bug needs a special adopter—one who will take care of her medical needs and give her the true love and affection she so richly deserves. If you’re interested in adopting Queenie, please contact our Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals looking for homes, visit our Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Gentle Giant

dog

Ready to make a commitment to a good-lookin’ cookie? Andre is an energetic, two-year-old Shepherd mix who was recently brought to our shelter when his pet parent was transferred by the U.S. Marines. A get-along dog, he still has his puppy spirit, and loves to run, leap, fetch, receive belly rubs and practice learning basic manners, especially when he’s rewarded with tasty treats.

Andre will likely thrive best in a single-dog household, and—because of his size—with older kids. He is a whole lotta pooch, but definitely a heartbreaker who will make an exceptional addition to any family with time, patience and a little bit of running room.

If you’re interested in adopting this handsome fella, please call our Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Or to view other animals looking for homes, visit our Adoption Center online.

cat

Looking for a kitty who knows the best things in life are fuzzy? Walter’s your guy—he’s a handsome, green-eyed, sweet-as-pie feline who will stand by your side in good and even better times. He would also like to spread the word that cats can and do live long, happy, normal lives with this virus. So give this lil’ fuzz ball a chance! ASPCA Happy Tails: Molly, Stay Forever Young!

Molly

Everybody remembers Sassy—the saucy Beagle whose youthful exuberance disguised her true age. We’re happy to report that the popular pooch (now known as Molly) is happily living with Bronx, NY, resident Floree Jackson and her loving family. On September 19, the day after Floree’s 26th birthday, the demonstrative canine became the missing puzzle piece for the Jacksons’ growing family. Now eight years old, Molly has a new name and a new lease on life. We recently caught up with the family matriarch and her fun-loving fur kid.

“Molly’s doing great!” Floree enthuses. “She has claimed the love seat by the front window as her own—she is really laid back, and gets along great with my kids.”

It seems Molly is finally enjoying the quiet wisdom—and the joy of napping—that comes with middle age. “She likes to sleep on her back on any pillow or pile of clothes!” Floree reports.

But don’t be fooled—Molly hasn’t totally left her puppy ways behind. Just as this former wiggle worm gets used to her new two-legged parents and siblings, so, too, is Floree adjusting to the unique habits of the canine kind. She says, “Molly is my first dog, so it’s funny to see her sniff in circles before she goes to the bathroom. She is definitely getting accustomed to my work schedule and wakes up with my alarm clock.”

“Molly is a wonderful addition to the family,” Floree adds. “She is a great pet for my children and fits right in. She’s made us the ‘typical family’—mom, dad, kids and a beautiful Beagle—who could ask for anything better?”

“Valentine is a very sweet, laid-back older lady who gets along with everyone,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor. “She’s one of those cats who doesn't mind a little commotion.”

ASPCA Happy Tails: We Are Family

Aniya

In April 2007, shortly after they received the keys to their first apartment in New York City, Lisa and John Bolender decided their first order of business was to adopt a dog. The young couple made a beeline for the ASPCA Adoption Center in Manhattan, where they met a special, one-year-old Cane Corso named Aniya, who also goes by the nickname Niya.

“She put her paw up against the glass when I came near, and we knew we had to meet her,” Lisa says. “The first night in our place in New York was spent with Niya curled up with us on a pile of blankets and pillows. She has been devoted to us ever since.”

Eventually, the little family moved back to their home state of Michigan, where they decided to expand their brood. “Niya wanted to play with every dog and person she came across, from sun up to sun down,” explains Lisa. “So John went to the Livingston County Humane Society and adopted Brutis, another Cane Corso, about four months younger than Niya.”

Now the two pooches are best buddies. Says Lisa: “Niya will plop herself down on Brutis' head or back her rear end into his side at least once an hour to get him to play. They run around and follow us from room to room, always jumping on each other.”

Aniya with baby

But the family didn’t stop there—in March 2008, Lisa and John welcomed a daughter, Ava, into their furry world. “Niya was wonderful with Ava from the start,” Lisa muses. “She even sleeps in Ava's room at night by her bed. Every time Ava wakes up, Niya is the first one she looks for.”

This fun-loving, loyal pooch has settled into life as a big sister and canine matriarch with ease. “She shakes her entire rear end when she is happy, to make up for the lack of a long tail,” Lisa laughs. “She also likes to ‘talk’ to us when she wants to play or just wants attention, and never ceases to get excited to see us when we walk through the door.”

She adds: “Niya is very special to us. She is an essential part of our every day. She makes us laugh and is Ava's best friend. I am so happy that we walked into the ASPCA that day.”

ASPCA Happy Tails: A Home of One’s Own

Bonnie

Our loyal readers will remember the fab five poodles who charmed us last year. They were the special pups who needed extra TLC after being rescued—along with nearly 30 other dogs—from a home in Queens, NY. All of these fortunate pooches were adopted, and we recently caught up with the new parent of the fab five’s lone lady, Bonnie. The eight-year-old was beloved at the ASPCA for her affection for other small dogs and calm, collected humans. Now she has a quiet home to call her own.

“My daughter and I first met Bonnie when we visited the ASPCA hoping to get a cat,” explains Patrice Mattia of Manhattan. “We did in fact have a cat in mind who we had seen on the website, but as it turned out, she wasn’t a match for us. My daughter, who had been looking at the dogs, said, ‘What about the little poodle?’ We were able to meet Bonnie that day, and thought she was adorable. I went back the next day to play with her.”

The shy pooch was a perfect match for the family, and they officially welcomed the little lady into their home on August 14. “She is the sweetest little dog in the world,” muses Patrice. “She’s a little on the quiet side, which is fine with me, and her favorite things to do are sleep and eat!”

That’s not to say Bonnie’s a bona fide couch potato—she still enjoys her city romps. “Her morning and afternoon walks are energetic, especially if pigeons are around,” Patrice says. “Her night walk is a short ‘walk’ period, just to take care of business, and a long ‘carry’ period—we stay out window-shopping for a long time. She only weighs five pounds, so I swoop her up in my arms.”

Clearly, urban wildlife is still a new and marvelous experience for the previously sheltered lass. “If she’s in the park, she is in heaven and walks and sniffs forever,” notes Patrice. “She almost never barks except when she sees pigeons. Then I think she surprises herself with her own bark, like ‘Where did that come from?’”

Patrice adds: “We totally love her—it feels as though she’s always been with us.”

ASPCA Happy Tails: Living the High Life

Smoke

From the mean streets of NYC to a leafy Connecticut town, one dog’s journey is a truly happy tale of pooch victim turned beloved family member. In the spring of 2008, the ASPCA received an anonymous tip from a caller who had seen several neglected dogs in Staten Island, NY. When our Humane Law Enforcement Agents investigated the report, they made a terrible discovery—dogs left for days in outdoor crates without food and water. The dogs’ temporary caretaker voluntarily relinquished one of the dogs—whose rightful owner had recently been incarcerated—to the ASPCA. The young Pit Bull, whom the ASPCA named Smoke, was malnourished and suffering from a neck wound.

The energetic pooch initially had a tough time putting his troubled past behind him, but after more than a year of rest, relaxation and compassionate care, Smoke emerged as one of the most popular and active dogs in our shelter. A true champ, he was a workout king who loved to chase tennis balls and run around with volunteers. Deemed a “charmer” by ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training Victoria Wells, it was no surprise that potential adopter Camille Fleetwood of New Milford, CT, saw something special in Smoke’s soulful gaze.

“I had originally seen Smoke on the ASPCA website in early August and thought he looked sad in his picture,” says Camille. She was intrigued, and eventually made the trip to the ASPCA in Manhattan to meet the dog. One seamless adoption later, Smoke is happily nestled in his fabulous New England life.

“Smoke has settled in nicely,” Camille reports. “He still gets spooked occasionally, but he’s adapted very well and is comfortable in his new surroundings. He has met a lot of our neighbors and seems to be a real people dog!”

Thanks to the kindness of his new family, Smoke finally feels secure enough to relax and let down his furry guard. Camille says: “He loves to roll on his back and have his tummy rubbed! He also loves to cuddle and sprawl with his back legs behind him. He sleeps with me on the bed and pulls the covers over himself with his mouth!”

She adds: “Smoke means the world to us, and we are so glad to have him. We feel blessed to have such a magnificent dog and so happy that we were able to give him a good, loving home.”

Judge Rules: NYC Must Create More Animal Shelters

dog with gavel

The ASPCA applauds a decision by the New York State Supreme Court to uphold a 2000 law mandating the existence of full-service animal shelters in all five New York City boroughs. In last week’s ruling, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Shafer gave the City 60 days to come up with a plan to implement the law(PDF) which will ultimately allow for more animals to be adopted and fewer to be euthanized.

While the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island are each outfitted with New York City Animal Care and Control shelters, the Bronx and Queens have only part-time animal receiving centers. Animals in these two boroughs are routinely sent to Manhattan and Brooklyn, where shelters quickly reach capacity, resulting in the euthanasia of healthy pets. Although funds were allocated for a full-service shelter in each borough, the City has not yet taken steps to purchase sites in the Bronx and Queens.

“Each New York City borough, by law, was required to have a full-service animal shelter by July 1, 2006,” states Michelle Villagomez, ASPCA Senior Manager of Advocacy & Campaigns. "The ASPCA has been urging New York City for years to fulfill its mandate and provide the people and animals of Queens and the Bronx with these shelters."

In January 2009, the nonprofit group Stray from the Heart sued the City, reasoning that its failure to set up animal shelters in the Bronx and Queens resulted in the “needless suffering and death of homeless cats and dogs." In its lawsuit, the group charged: “Homeless dogs have been dying in unconscionable numbers because the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has not provided the shelter space required by statute.”

Notes Villagomez, “Not only are healthy, innocent animals being euthanized before getting a chance at adoption, but residents of these boroughs are tax-paying New Yorkers and deserve the same services that residents in the other three boroughs receive.”

The City of New York plans to appeal the court's decision.

ASPCA Happy Tails: Inspector 12

Cricket

Working as an ASPCA Animal Care Technician, it seemed that Queens, NY, resident Angela Acevedo was destined to cross paths with nine-year-old lap cat Cricket. “Back in June, while I was cleaning cat rooms on the fourth floor, I met this sweet feline,” Angela recalls. Working with her day after day, Angela couldn’t help but notice how gentle Cricket was, but also that no one wanted to adopt her.

“One reason, I think, was because of her condition. She was on a special diet for her kidneys,” Angela recalls. “I didn't want her ending up in a household that would eventually give her back. When I mentioned her to my family, they flat out asked ‘Why don't YOU adopt her?’ That was my green light to bring Cricket home.”

When she arrived, Cricket was nervous. “On her first day, she didn't move around at all,” Angela remembers. “She stayed in the same spot on the couch for days except to use the bathroom. She also wasn't eating or drinking much, so I had to heat up her food and hand-feed her.” After a week, something changed. Cricket began to walk around the living room inspecting every inch, and she still does it to this day. “After a nice, long nap, she walks around the entire house, visiting each room to see who’s in there. Once she leaves the room, we won’t see her for hours.”

Angela’s entire family is in love with this thorough gal, including her other adopted cat, Rambo. “When I get home from work, I’ll find Rambo lying next to her, just watching her sleep,” Angela says. Cricket’s now the official queen of the Acevedo household, presiding with a loud purr. “She may be nine years old and have health issues,” says Angela, “but it doesn’t make us love her any less. I plan to make the rest of her life incredibly fulfilling.”

ASPCA Happy Tails: Stray Cat Strut

Poppy Seed

Working at the ASPCA, it’s a given that your job rarely ends when you leave the office for the day. This truism recently hit home for Bronx resident and ASPCA Department Coordinator Veronica Rodriguez. Earlier this summer, Veronica was walking toward the building where she lives when she noticed some kids throwing rocks. As she got closer, she saw a small injured cat huddling in a corner.

“I immediately told the kids to stop, and not surprisingly, they started saying terrible things back to me,” Veronica explains. “To make them stop, I sat on the sidewalk in front of the cat. He was still very scared and wouldn’t let me touch him or even go near him. I sat there for a half an hour, and then suddenly, he climbed into my lap. That was the green light for me to bring him to the ASPCA!”

Named Josh by the medical staff, the two-year-old stray passed his medical exam and behavior assessment with flying colors. “He stole the hearts of everyone on the third floor, where we set up his crate when he first arrived,” says Gail Buchwald, ASPCA Senior Vice President. “Even right after he got here, he was rolling on his back and ‘making biscuits’ in the air whenever anyone stopped to talk to him.”

The staff could hardly contain their enthusiasm for sweet, loving Josh. In fact, Veronica was telling her story to other team members, when a potential adopter overheard her and asked to meet this special kitty who’d captured the hearts and minds of so many.

“We went into the socialization room and sat down on the floor, and Josh immediately head butted the adopter’s daughter—it was love at first sight!” enthuses Veronica. “The adopter said, ‘He’s coming home with us—that’s it, he’s mine!’”

The rest is history: Josh’s new family renamed him Poppy Seed, and thanks to the quick thinking and compassion of an ASPCA team member, a lucky cat now has a loving home.

Tiger Ranch Raid Update: Rescued Cats Now Up for Adoption!

cat

More than one year after being rescued, nearly 250 of the 390 cats seized in one of the largest anti-cruelty raids of recent times are on the lookout for new forever homes. The cats, who were held for over a year as evidence during the investigation and subsequent prosecution of Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary owner Lin Marie, have spent this time recovering from such ailments as malnutrition, dehydration, respiratory conditions and various skin conditions.

Back in March of 2008, members of the ASPCA Field Services and Disaster Response Teams found the cats living in squalor on the 28-acre property in Tarentum, Pennsylvania. Investigators also found hundreds of dead cats, some in freezers inside the home, others in open burial pits and still others in plain view.

On July 13, 2009, sanctuary owner Marie, also known as Linda Bruno, pleaded guilty to 12 misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and two other counts of tampering with evidence. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Marie will never again be able to own, control or possess any animals. She also will have to pay $200,000 in restitution to the Clarion County Humane Society in Shippenville, which has been caring for the surviving cats since the raid took place. Marie will be sentenced on October 5, 2009, and could face jail time.

"The Tiger Ranch cats were held for such a long period of time because they were still technically the property of Lin Marie,” explains Cori Menkin, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Initiatives. “Because of due process laws, the animals cannot be adopted out to anyone else until a court has ruled that the owner cannot keep the animals, or the owner agrees to voluntarily surrender the animals. Prior to that, the animals must be held as potential evidence in the criminal case.”

Adoptions are taking place at the Clarion County Humane Society. For more information on how to adopt the cats contact (814) 226-9192.

“Kitty is a very special gal looking for a special home,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor. “She's easygoing, loves attention—but she's not too demanding—and even has a playful side. She loves her fuzzy rainbow colored mice!” Kitty has a few medical issues, including a chronic liver problem that requires a lifetime of treatment—but in return, you’ll get many years of unconditional furry love. ASPCA Happy Tails: Golden Girl

Pinky

As summer comes to a close, many pet parents are starting to nest, cozying up their homes for short days and chilly nights. For Elisabeth Komito of Astoria, NY, the changing season inspired the adoption of a new furry, four-legged roommate—her first pet since moving out of her childhood home.

Elisabeth first met Pinky—a seven-year-old kitty with multi-colored eyes—on August 29 at the ASPCA Adoption Center in Manhattan, and adopted her less than a week later. Now unofficially known as “Pinky-Lee,” this outgoing feline has settled easily into her new digs and proved once and for all that older cats make fantastic companions.

“She's a remarkably well-adjusted cat,” says Elli. “I took her home, and within ten minutes of letting her out of the carrying case, she explored the apartment and settled down on my bed for a nap. An hour later, she was on the living room floor, on her back, and totally relaxed.”

Not the most demure of elder ladies, Pinky doesn’t hesitate to show her delight over physical affection. “I discovered that if you scratch just the right spot under her chin, her hind leg will thump like a dog's when you hit the sweet spot,” Elli says. “It's so adorable!”

But Pinky’s no pushover—she’s still a cat, after all. Elli explains: “She loves to play, but on her terms. Basically, she'll wait until whatever you're dangling is within arm's reach before she even considers pouncing.”

Elli acknowledges that she has become “an obnoxiously proud pet parent,” and looks forward to adding to her furry brood, as long as Pinky allows it. She adds: “It's been less than a week, and already I can't imagine my life without her. She's definitely one of the best decisions I've made since moving to the city. I love her so much—she's the most amazing cat I could ever ask for.”

“Bella is an energetic pooch looking for a pet parent who has time to exercise with her every day,” says Marny Nofi, ASPCA Administrative Assistant and Behavior Coordinator. “She loves to learn new tricks, especially if you have a treat!”

So stuff your pockets with biscuits and high-tail it over here—Bella won’t be at our Adoption Center forever. If you’re interested in adopting, please call our Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Or to view other animals looking for homes, visit our Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Rescue Tails: Kitten Survives Six Days in Duffel Bag

Duff

If one cat’s will to live could outmatch the strength of a heavy canvas bag, then surely one little kitten in Spokane County, WA, has the courage of a lion. Last week, two maintenance workers were testing garage doors at an apartment complex when they heard the muffled sounds of a distressed kitten coming from a large, heavy canvas duffel bag. The workers unzipped the bag only to find a second zipped duffel bag inside. When they opened the second bag, they discovered a frightened orange kitten, whom they promptly named Duff.

After giving him a much-needed bath, the rescuers called the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS)—an ASPCA Mission: Orange partner agency—to pick up and care for the tiny, suffering kitten.

“Duff was very lucky to be found,” says Animal Protection Officer Nicole Montano. “He probably would have died that day.”

Spokane Valley resident Donivan Crews later confessed to SCRAPS that he placed the kitten in the duffel bags six days prior to discovery. Crews was charged with confinement in an unsafe manner.

But this story of cruel abandonment has a very happy ending. One of Duff’s knights in shining armor adopted the lucky feline, who’s now recovering in a truly loving home.

“We are so grateful for the heroes who not only rescued this kitten but also took him into their hearts and home,” says Jackie E. Bell, SCRAPS Development Coordinator. “Duff will always have his name as a reminder of how he overcame such a tough start in life.”

dog

He would be a great dog for a first time pet parent.”

ASPCA Happy Tails: Young Love

Cooper

Love often lives in curious places—for Amy Springer of Manhattan, her true furry love was found in Times Square, a neighborhood not known for encouraging quiet reflections of the heart. But don’t tell Cooper, a wiggly Pit mix, whom Amy met by chance at Broadway Barks, an annual ASPCA adoption event in midtown Manhattan.

“It was an unexpected encounter,” explains Amy. “I was told about the event earlier that morning at an adoption clinic.” But the moment’s spontaneity didn’t temper her feelings one bit. “I saw Cooper and immediately fell in love with him!” she says.

Thankfully, Cooper isn’t quite as madcap as one might expect of a six-month-old puppy. “Cooper is generally very laid back and more docile than I thought he might be, since he’s so young,” Amy explains. “He’s also very social with people and other animals we encounter on our walks.”

And unlike most doggies, personal hygiene is apparently a big priority. “Every morning when I take a shower for work, he tries to get into the shower with me,” says Amy with a laugh. “Some days I’ll let him, and he just lies down and lets the water fall on him—I’m glad he likes to stay clean!”

In no time, the pup has become a constant companion for Amy and a much-welcomed addition to hers and her boyfriend’s lives. Amy adds: “Cooper is who I’ve been waiting for—he is the start of our family and our life together. He has changed our lives in the most positive way.”

ASPCA Pets of the Week: Double Your Fun!

cats

We all know dogs love to roll in packs, but sometimes cats, too, like to lounge the day away with a furry friend. If you’re thinking about adopting a kitty, why not choose a bonded pair? Take Justine and Miranda—both three years old, these sweet lassies are like the yin and yang of the feline world.

Miranda is sensitive and quiet, while Justine is an outgoing lap cat—“a dog in a cat suit,” according to our behaviorists.

“With Justine and Miranda, you get the best of both worlds!” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor. “They need a quiet household with an adopter who has some patience, one who will be rewarded with the company of two lovely, affectionate kitties.”

If you’re interested in adopting this darling duo, please call our Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Or to view other animals looking for homes, visit our Adoption Center online.

Become a Foster Parent to Needy Animals!

Woman holdnig foster kitten

We all know one of the best ways to help your local shelter is to donate your time as a volunteer. But what about volunteering your home to some needy animals? Shelters nationwide often need help caring for their pets until they’re ready for adoption. Animal foster programs are a great way to make a hands-on difference in the lives of animals in your community.

For example, the ASPCA’s Foster Care Program matches animal-loving Good Samaritans like you with pregnant and nursing cats, underweight kittens and puppies and recovering dogs and cats. The animals are cared for in the volunteer's home until they are ready to be placed into the adoption program. Foster parents receive food, supplies and medication, and those volunteers who fall in love—it’s been known to happen!—do have the option to adopt the pets in their care.

According to ASPCA Volunteer Manager Diane Wilkerson, the need for fosters for cats and kittens is especially great. "The more cats and kittens that we get out and into foster homes until they are ready for adoption, the more space we have here at the shelter," says Diane. "We work collaboratively with some of the area’s other shelters and bring animals here, so it gives them a better opportunity to find a loving home."

Still need convincing? Check out our Foster Diaries, an updated blog by one of our selfless volunteers who’s spending her summer vacation fostering a new mama cat and her kittens.

P.S.: Live in NYC and want to become a foster caretaker? Contact Cherylyn Washington at cherylynw@aspca.org or (212) 876-7700, ext. 4170 to sign up for our next orientation class on August 20! And remember, many shelters across the country sponsor similar programs, so be sure to check with your local shelter if you’re interested in fostering needy pets.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Friends Make the World Go ‘Round

Lola

You’d probably never call Lola an extrovert, but she definitely draws strength from those of her own kind. Sweet and petite, this four-year-old Pit Bull is one of our most special pups—she requires an experienced pet parent and, more importantly, a doggie friend with whom to spend her days. “Lola is a shy girl who prefers dog friends to people,” says Marny Nofi, ASPCA Administrative Assistant and Behavior Coordinator. “She’s much more confident when other dogs are around and should go home with someone who’s looking for a second pet. She does best with kids who respect her and give her space when she needs it.”

So why not add this soulful sister to your pack? If you’re interested in adopting Lola, please call our Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Or to view other animals looking for homes, visit our Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Rescue Tails: Learning to Be a Dog Again

Skylar

Jan Viney, Development Director of Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) in Madison, WI, knows all too well that working in animal welfare often means falling in love with a new furry friend every day. Until recently, she had reserved her love for the feline kind, specifically her three cats, but that changed earlier this year when DCHS received an influx of severely neglected dogs who needed extra care.

On May 19, DCHS joined the ASPCA, among other agencies, in a full-scale raid of the Thyme and Sage Ranch, an animal "sanctuary" in Cazenovia, WI. The emergency response teams discovered more than 400 animals housed in deplorable conditions and suffering from neglect—ear and eye infections, rotted teeth, mange, malnutrition and infections were rampant. One such victim was Skylar, a two-year-old dog whose fur was so matted she could hardly walk.

“Most of the animals from Thyme and Sage were very under-socialized,” Jan says. “Skylar had kennel cough, so it was difficult to get her out among other animals and people.”

Looking to lend a helping hand, Jan offered to foster the suffering pup in her office during the day. She admits, “I was a little nervous at first, since I’d never had a dog. July 6 was the first day she spent in my office, and she was terribly timid and wouldn’t even walk on a leash.”

“Within a week, I couldn’t bear returning her to the kennel at night,” says Jan. “So I started fostering full time—and the rest is history!”

Skylar is now happily ensconced with Jan, her partner, Peter, and their three cats, Prism, Maddie and Oliver. The family has adjusted well as Skylar learns for the first time to be a well-loved pet.

“It’s so fun watching her discover what it means to be a dog,” Jan reflects. “She is really coming out of her shell and loves to be outdoors. At first, she was unsure of the grass, but now every time I take her for a walk, she is so happy. That’s why I named her Skylar—the lure of the sky—Skye, for short.”

P.S.: Live in Wisconsin and looking to foster a pup like Skylar? DCHS is looking for experienced volunteers to care for the animals rescued from the Thyme and Sage Ranch. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Jan Viney at janviney@giveshelter.org.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Someone to Watch Over Me

Smokey

Searching for someone to adore you? One-year-old Smokey might be the boy kitty you’re looking for. This handsome friend will love to love you—and really, what more could you want? With emerald green eyes, he’s a secret admirer, meaning he’s mostly level-headed, but still knows the value of a good head butt.

“Smokey likes other cats and loves people,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor. “Once he settles in, he's a relaxed kind of guy who would be happy just chilling with his favorite person or cat—and he always makes time for play.”

So get cracking, people—this little kitty won’t be here for long, especially once he starts batting those lashes at potential pet parents. ASPCA Pet of the Week: Hale and Hearty Meatball

Meatball

Perhaps his photo says it all—Meatball’s a get-along Pit Bull with a great sense of humor and energy to boot. He’s the perfect pooch for the active pet parent looking for a companion to hit the park—and the pavement—for fun in the sun. But don’t forget the sunscreen! This little Meatie’s snow white fur makes him prone to sunburn.

Now three years old, Meatball originally came to the ASPCA in early 2007, but his winning personality translated into a speedy adoption by a pet-loving family from New Jersey. Proving once and for all that Pit Bulls can be sweet pushovers in the right home, he lived peacefully for two years with the family’s cats, rabbit and ferret. But sadly, this animal lovefest didn’t last—the family lost their home and had to return sweet Meat to the ASPCA.

That’s where you come in—Meatball is ready and waiting for another home. So why not give this tender niblet a try? If you’re interested in adopting, get on the horn to our Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ASPCA Happy Tails: Her Name in Lights!

Bella

Small-town girl makes a splash in the big city—that’s our pup Bella. When this black-and-tan Shepherd Mix arrived at the ASPCA Adoption Center in Manhattan from a shelter in Tennessee, she had no idea she would soon co-star with one of New York’s biggest stars of stage and screen—Bernadette Peters. On the morning of July 11, Peters—who co-hosts the annual, ASPCA-sponsored Broadway Barks adopt-a-thon, a benefit for New York City shelters—appeared on Fox 5 News with four ASPCA pooches, including mellow Bella. Later in the day, this sweet pup made an appearance at Broadway Barks, where she mingled with more than 7,000 theater lovers of the two- and four-legged kind.

But it wasn’t until the next day, when Bella was recovering from her matinee and evening performances, that she met her match. Dennis Sefiner of Manhattan had been searching for a dog to add to his family, but hadn’t met the “one” until he paid a visit to the ASPCA on July 12.

“I met a few dogs, but Bella was the one,” says Dennis. It seems he was particularly taken with the puppy’s Shepherd heritage and her youthful energy. Now four months old, Bella has firmly settled into her new home with Dennis and his family.

“She has a great personality!” says Dennis. “She's very, very playful, but when we decide to watch a movie or lounge around, she’s right in the middle cuddling up and hanging out with everyone else.”

But old habits die hard, and this sweet companion hasn’t totally lost her diva-tude. Dennis says, laughing, “When someone tells her no, she'll go and pee on something that belongs to that person—usually a shoe!”

He adds: “Bella means quite a bit to me, and every day she becomes more a part of the family. She keeps the stress level in the house to a minimum, which is greatly appreciated.”

P.S.: Lest you think Bella misses her furry friends at the shelter, it turns out that she now has a feline sister. Dennis’ girlfriend’s father also visited the ASPCA Adoption Center on July 12, and adopted Betty, a three-year-old, grey-and-white Tabby!

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Ziggy Stardust in Her Eyes

Cora

Looking for a sweet-faced sister who will keep an eye on things? Look no further than Cora, a two-year-old Tabby cat who’s sitting at our shelter right now, waiting for your love and affection. Deemed a Private Investigator by our expert behaviorists, Cora is a mellow kind—content to hang out and while away the long summer days watching the boob tube or examining your floorboards.

Though we think she’s perfect in every way, Cora does have a misshapen iris in her left eye. It doesn’t cause her any vision problems—it just looks really cool, like David Bowie, who famously has one pupil that’s smaller than the other. So why not get hip to the ways of this modern miss and adopt her today? Please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120, to set up an appointment. ASPCA Happy Tails: Undercover Snuggler

Spud

This past February, New Yorker Violaine Esnault came to the ASPCA Adoption Center with a special Pit Bull on her mind. Spud had been rescued from a neglectful home by ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents and had been made ready for adoption by our anti-cruelty veterinarians and adoptions staff. “I saw Spud’s video on your website and fell in love with his ears and facial expressions,” Violaine recalls. “When I saw him in person, sitting in his glass enclosure with those super expressive eyes, I just had to play with him.” Meeting Spud in a play room sealed the deal. Spud eagerly ran into Violaine’s arms without a moment's hesitation.

The one-year-old pup was a little confused when arriving at his new home, but never veered from his sweet disposition. “He was excited and nippy, but in a loving way,” Violaine explains. Now he’s gotten so laid back that couch potato is a more apt description. “We were told he would be very high maintenance, which at times he is,” Violaine admits, “but what surprises me is that more than anything else, he likes to snuggle up with me on the couch.”

In fact, Spud makes great efforts to maintain his snuggling schedule. Says Violaine, “Spuddy knows that he’s not supposed to sleep in our bed―he’s got his own. But every morning, he wakes us with this low-pitch whimpering that just gets louder and louder. We end up letting him into our bed, where he just falls right back to sleep. Who knew?”

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Perfect Balance

Ying-Yang

Just as his name indicates, one-year-old Ying Yang is a perfectly balanced pooch—easily combining his playful side with his need for cuddles. Shamelessly social, this Giant Schnauzer mix generously doles out puppy kisses to everyone he meets, but also knows when it’s time to sit and relax. And while he loves nothing more than to snuggle, when the urge to play hits, he's off and running!

“Ying Yang’s a go-getter with boundless energy and love to share,” says Arthur Hazelwood, Director of the ASPCA Adoption Center. “He’s also extremely intelligent and willing to learn new commands for a few tasty rewards.”

Always up for an adventure, he’s the perfect pooch to bring on a peaceful afternoon stroll or a rigorous 15-mile hike. He would be a great match for an active family who will continue his training and give him lots of love and attention.

Because of his size, Ying Yang would do best in a home with older children. To adopt this perfectly balanced lad, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Happy Tails: Pay It Forward

ASPCA Happy Tails: Pay It Forward

When the handsome Golden Retriever formerly known as Anikan arrived at the ASPCA in 2006, he was tentative and shy like any homeless pup might be in similar circumstances. But he quickly warmed up to our Adoptions Team and demonstrated his love of toys and top-notch tricks. Sit, down, stay and come—he knew his commands like a pro, and all at the tender age of just one year old.

Thus it came as no surprise that potential adopters instantly fell for Anikan’s effortless charm. Lisa and Jay Sands of Manhattan certainly weren’t immune. They adopted the pup—now known as Jake—on November 28, 2006, and quickly made him feel comfortable and secure in his new forever home on the Upper East Side.

More than two years later, Jake is a treasure for the Sands as well as their friends and neighbors. “Jake has never met a stranger—man or beast—he didn’t like,” Lisa says. Among his favorite activities is swimming in the kiddie pool at the dog park—who says city dogs miss out on the joys of nature?!

But this get-along doggie isn’t just about fun and frolicking. He has a community service side, too. “Jake has given back to his animal community by being a foster brother to a rescue cat and two shelter dogs,” explains Lisa. “He made them feel welcome in his home and showed them the ropes.”

This selfless pooch has been there—he knows what it’s like to be homeless and shows deep empathy for his orphaned, four-legged friends. According to Lisa, “Jake’s trusting, gentle, generous nature calmed his foster siblings in their new environment and helped them all eventually get adopted into loving, forever families.”

She adds: “We all love Jake so much and are grateful the ASPCA kept him safe until he became a part of our family!”

ASPCA Happy Tails: Just What the Doctor Ordered

Cat

Sometimes the key to our hearts lies in the most unexpected places. Ruth and Tom Reinecke of Queens, NY, found theirs in a middle-aged cat with a funny grin and special needs. Back in the summer of 2007, Lilly was a favorite of ASPCA adoptions staff and volunteers. Sweet and shy, she was a perfect candidate for anyone looking for a mellow lap cat. But one thing deterred potential pet parents: Lovely Lilly had tested positive for the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which can seriously weaken a cat's immune system.

The Reineckes, however, were not put off by Lilly's medical status. "We were entranced by the funny way she stuck out her tongue," Ruth says, laughing. And her winning personality helped her score the kind of forever home of which many kitties dream. The Reineckes understood that Lilly's FIV status didn't mean she would necessarily get sick or show symptoms for years. With the right care and compassion, FIV-positive cats can enjoy happy, healthy lives.

"At more than five years old now, Lilly has not been sick," Ruth reports. "In fact, she's been very active and glad to have more room to scamper and play. She does the cutest hops!"

Ever the bouncing social bee, Lilly never met a person—or a belly scratcher—she didn't adore. "She still loves her tummy rubs and believes all visitors have come just to pet her," says Ruth. "This may be so—our friends and family barely say hello before asking, 'Where is Lilly?'" Nonetheless, she still reserves her special "nose kisses" for Ruth and Tom.

"Our sweet girl came to us with a heart full of love," says Ruth. "Many thanks to the staff and volunteers at the ASPCA for our darling Lilly."

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Best All-Around Player

Cat

Four-year-old Sedrick is a dreamboat Tabby with the patience of a prince. He's chubbalicious in all the right places, gets along with other cats and knows when it's time to hit the snooze button. But for some reason, he can't get a date. This guy really needs to get out—won't you be the one to take him home?

"Sedrick is the all-around perfect cat!" raves Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor. "He's mellow a lot of the time but also has a playful side, especially with other cats. He's affectionate but not super demanding, and would be happy sitting quietly or getting showered with attention. He's such a handsome boy!"

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Long-time Companion

Jillian

Our veteran feline friend Jillian needs a little help. This sweet-faced sister has lived at the ASPCA for three years, and as much as we love having her around, we'd really like to see her find a place to call her own. Really, who wants to live at work? A girl needs a break!

"Lovely, lovely Jillian!" enthuses Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor. "She's a fun cat to be around—she adores sitting on laps and will do so for hours." This special girl prefers not to live with dogs or small children, but may enjoy living with another cat, provided he or she's FIV-positive like Jillian.

If you like social kitties, you'll love this busy bee. She also comes free of all adoption fees. That's right—all cats over three are free at our Adoption Center for a limited time! ASPCA Happy Tails: Picture Perfect

ASPCA Happy Tails Picture Perfect

The old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” really rang true for Rahel Michaeli and her husband. The couple fell head over heels in love with a photo posted on the ASPCA website of a pooch named Jack. The 10-month-old Pit Bull came to the ASPCA after being rescued by Special Agent Paul Lai.

“Jack was a classic case of neglect,” says Agent Lai. “He was not being fed; he also had bodily scars and part of his tongue appeared to have been bitten off.”

Despite his apparent bumps and bruises, the Michaeli family couldn’t wait to meet the pup. “When we reached his kennel at the ASPCA Adoption Center,” recalls Rahel, “he had just woken from a nap—he was even cuter than his photo!”  The couple took Jack to the playroom and over a game of fetch, knew they had met their perfect match.

Jack’s first night in his new home was just as perfect.  “I remember walking into the living room and seeing my husband hand-feeding Jack pieces of roast chicken as they both lounged on the couch.” But don’t be fooled by that imagery, Jack is no couch potato. After a year of living with the Michaeli family, he has put on 25 pounds and is now a lean, mean, running machine. “I’ve lost 20 pounds from our daily three-mile runs!” exclaims Rahel.

And how does Jack end his busy days? In bed with mom and dad, of course! “Jack has slept in bed with us since the day we brought him home,” says Rahel. “He stretches out right in between us, under the covers. We can’t imagine what our picture perfect family would be like without him.”

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Pet Sounds

Cricket

One little lady living in our shelter has purred her way to our hearts—Cricket, along with her fellow fab felines, is one of our top cats. At nine years old, Cricket is an aged beauty. So in honor of June as Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month, we think she more than deserves the spotlight. But not a microphone, thank you very much! This black-and-white lap cat has the loudest purr this side of the Mississippi River.

“Cricket's a very, very mellow, laid-back gal who would be perfectly happy snoozing next to her favorite person all day,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor. “She’s low maintenance behavior-wise!”

So why not let this mature kitty park it on your lap for the second half of her life? She’ll make a great companion and cuddle bug. Oh, and did we mention she’s free? That’s right, all cats over three are free at the ASPCA Adoption Center for a limited time! But just ‘cuz she’s free, doesn’t mean she’s cheap. So show some respect and come meet this lovely lady—or call ASPCA Animal Placement at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To view other animals looking for homes, please visit our Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pets of the Week: Tale of Two Kitties

Brad and Angelina

Just like sugar and spice, Brad and Angelina make a very sweet couple—but unlike their celebrity counterparts, the members of this adoptable dynamic duo are siblings. At two years old, brother and sister share more than a common ancestry—they both have lovable and gentle personalities.

While Angelina is a bit unsure of herself in new surroundings, given a little adjustment time—and a few loving scratches under her chin—she’ll purr her way into your heart. Brad on the other hand, is always up for an adventure! There’s nothing he enjoys more than chasing feather toys and catnip mice.

“They are both extremely sweet and Brad’s happy purr is so loud, you can hear it from across a room!” comments Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor. “They're very attached to each other, but always have time to bask in human attention and indulge in hours of playtime.”

Both kitties would do best in a patient household, where they can take their time getting used to new surroundings. Brad and Angelina are very much bonded and are hoping for a second chance at happiness in a home together.

If you’re like us, and think adopting two kitties is better than one, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120 to set up a time to meet Brad and Angelina. To view other animals waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Happy Tails: That’s What Friends Are For

Goosie

When Maria Picazo of New York, NY, set out to find a companion for her reserved male kitty, Honey, she never expected to meet such a sweet-faced feline as Natalia. Deemed an Orange Sidekick by our feline behaviorists at the ASPCA Adoption Center, Natalia boasts more than just a pretty face and a pleasant demeanor—she’s a top-notch companion for humans and fellow kitties alike. The petite, grey cat arrived at the ASPCA from a Brooklyn city shelter in September 2008. Shortly thereafter, her future pet parent came calling.

“She has been a blessing in my life, along with Honey, whom I adopted three years earlier,” says Maria. The grateful pet parent eventually renamed the 3-year-old charmer Goosie, and she was delighted to watch her settle seamlessly into her new home.

“When she first arrived, Goosie was curious and eating voraciously,” reports Maria. She also wasted no time getting comfortable, and even implemented a strict schedule of afternoon naps on the edge of Maria’s couch.

But this little kitty is no lazy bones. A big fan of playtime, Goosie, the extrovert, has even helped bring quiet Honey out of his shell.  “They get along so well! Even though Honey’s a little bit shy, Goosie always nudges him out of bed to play,” Maria notes. And she adds, “I hope there will be many more cats who are as fortunate and well-loved.”

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Happy Camper!

Mimi

Introducing Mimi, a smiling, tail-wagging, three-legged pooch whose captivating personality and fondness for sloppy kisses delight everyone she meets.

"This 1-year-old came to us with multiple wounds—she had fractures in her pelvis and her leg had to be amputated," says Victoria Wells, ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training.  “In spite of her physical challenges, though, Mimi is a happy, courageous girl with a playful spirit.”

After being on strict cage rest until she healed, this eager Busy Bee got busy learning to walk again. While she occasionally loses her balance, one thing Mimi’s not short on is determination—she now takes ASPCA volunteers on walks!

Mimi would be a great match for a family willing to train and exercise her. She’s also best suited for a home with children 10 and up. And by the way, this playful little pooch loves other dogs!

If you’ve got a desire for this determined little charmer, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. Interested adopters will need to speak to our veterinarian to find out what orthopedic care Mimi might need in the future. ASPCA Happy Tails: Holdin’ Out for a Hero

Lois Lane

In April 2008, while investigating a cruelty complaint in Queens, NY, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Special Agent Brad English found two pit bulls, a male and female, chained up in a yard. “I saw the male attack the female,” recalls English. “She had several puncture wounds on her body and was very thin. She couldn’t get any food because the male was guarding it.”

In dire need of medical care, the docile female was brought to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Hospital, where veterinarians attended to her wounds and crowned her with a heroic name, Lois Lane. Says the ASPCA's Dr. Robert Reisman, Veterinarian and Coordinator of Abuse Cases, “Not only did she come in with multiple bite wounds on her body, but a wound on her right front leg had gotten so badly infected that she couldn’t put any weight on it.”

By January 2009, after being treated by ASPCA veterinarians, the well-healed Lois Lane was adopted by Brooklyn resident Matthew Pace. “I was looking for a dog with energy and personality,” Pace recalls. “I saw Lois’s video on the ASPCA website and fell in love.”  When Pace visited the ASPCA Adoption Center, little Lois apparently got that lovin’ feeling, too. “She was the first dog I met,” Pace recalls, “and as I walked around meeting others, I saw her peering through the window of her kennel at me.”

Now 2 years old and thoroughly settled into her new life, this little heroine has left her past behind. “She's so sweet and smart, it blows my mind,” Pace says of Lois, who not only indulges in couch-cuddlin’, but boldly demands play time. “When she wants to play, she just grabs the nearest toy and either puts it in my lap or tries to put it in my hand.”

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Pretty in Pink

Jenny

Jenny may be small, and she may wear a pink ribbon in her fur, but don’t let that fool you—she’s as sharp as they come. “Jenny’s a mature lady who takes just a few moments to figure out whether you are trustworthy or not,” says Victoria Wells, ASPCA Manager of Behavior and Training.

Once you pass the shih tzu test this 8-year-old cutie decides you meet her standards of excellence, she’ll be happy to cuddle up to you. She has a low energy level, according to Wells. So while she’s polite and greets other dogs, Jenny would be happiest as the only pet in a household with kids 10 and up.

To seek Jenny’s approval, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.  To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online. Please note, Jenny has multiple medical issues and you’ll need to speak with our vets before taking her home.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Still on the Menu

Menunu

It’s no wonder that Menunu is a bit pudgy, considering he has the word “menu” in his name! It’s not that Menunu is adverse to exercise—he simply prefers yoga to cardio. Six years old and content in his own fur, he loves the chance to stretch his paws and sit in the middle of the room, enjoying the space and peacefully observing his surroundings.

Menunu has been dubbed a Sidekick by Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor.

“I love Mr. Pudge! He's the best! He's perfect for someone who wants a cat who has it all (in a really big, cuddly package),” beams Watts. Menunu would love to be your constant companion as you roam about your home, and provide you the quiet comfort you seek after a long, hard day. Everything about Menunu is relaxing; his black fur, his quiet purrs—even his soft meows.

Potential parents should be aware that Menunu will need to be on a special diet, probably for the rest of his life. If you are into the serene scene and would like to meet Menunu, please call the ASPCA Animal Placement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. ASPCA Pet of the Week: What’s In a Name?

Dog

We don't call her Sassy for nothing! When you enter this spunky pooch's kennel at the ASPCA Adoption Center, she's always ready to play.

"You are not seven years old!" says Beverly Pietrucha, Dog Volunteer Coordinator, with a laugh as Sassy licks her face. Although the gal indeed has seven years behind her, she's a playful, energetic pup at heart.

In exchange for lots of playtime, Sassy will give you kisses and roll over for belly rubs—not exactly a hard bargain! Just know that when Sassy falls in love, she falls hard. "Potential adopters should talk to our behaviorists about Sassy's separation anxiety," Pietrucha advises. And although she would prefer to be the only dog in the household, Sassy does like cats.

Please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120 for more information on this beautiful beagle. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Cooking Good!

flounder

We’re pretty sure that Flounder the cat nurtures a secret ambition to be a chef. Margaret McLaughlin, ASPCA Director of Veterinary Technicians, fosters Flounder in her office and has observed his culinary skills up close. “He swipes several pieces of dry food, carries them to his water bowl, drops them in, and swirls the mixture with his paw,” McLaughlin explains. “We think he’s making soup.”

Like many top chefs, Flounder needs to be in control of his space—but he can handle the heat! This six-year-old tuxedo cat loves physical, interactive play with people and will need a daily dose of exercise.

When it comes to other animals, Flounder is opposed to too many cooks in the kitchen, and would do best as the only pet in the household.  But he does seek a loving human assistant to provide him the ingredients for his gourmet concoctions. If this is your dream job, call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120, to meet Flounder.  To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Home for the Holly Days

Holly

For Holly, getting rescued was literally a breath of fresh air. Our animal cops found the one-year-old pit bull hungry and neglected, living in a basement—she hadn’t been outdoors for quite some time. It’s no wonder that she was shy around people for awhile.

But things are definitely looking up. Beautiful Holly has gained weight and is coming out of her shell. She’s affectionate with people—especially familiar faces—and enjoys a good cuddle.

Could this sweetie be a country gal at heart? Holly is still wary of walking outside on the streets of New York City, where the lights, people and action make her nervous. “She would love a suburban home with a backyard, maybe upstate or in one of the boroughs,” explains Victoria Wells, ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training. As for canine playmates, she would do well in a home with another calm dog.

ASPCA Happy Tails: Winner Takes It All

Reposted from our weekly News Alert:

Joey

Back in January, Bounce®, in a charitable partnership with Petside.com and the ASPCA, invited you to vote in the 15 Most Lovable Shelter Pets contest. All contestants were homeless pets residing in ASPCA® Mission: Orange shelters, our partners in working to end the euthanasia of adoptable pets throughout the country.

The staff at Charleston Animal Society (CAS) decided to enter Joey, a 1½-year-old dachshund found with a serious eye injury, wandering alone on a busy road. On the day the contest photos were taken, Joey had just had surgery, leaving him with only one eye.

Says Kay Hyman, CAS director of outreach and communications, “We chose Joey for the contest because we wanted to help find him a family that understood his special needs.”

Joey garnered more than 3,000 of the 15,790 votes cast in the contest. Not only did he take the grand prize, winning his shelter a monetary award, but he found a new home the month before the contest ended.

Says new dad John Baker of North Charleston, SC, “The way he looked at me when I first saw him in the shelter—I just fell in love. There was Joey, sitting there with one eye and people avoiding him, but I was so drawn to him.”

Apparently, this little champion does not consider the loss of an eye a problem. “Sometimes he runs past his ball because he can’t see it,” says Baker, “but that doesn’t stop him from playing fetch.” Well, his version of fetch, anyway. “He likes to run after the balls, but doesn’t feel the least obliged to bring them back.”

Joey has also revealed himself to be a dreamer—literally. “At night, he lies on his back between my and my wife’s pillows,” says Baker, “stretching and talking in his sleep. It’s not unusual for me to feel a paw on my back!”

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Sweet Dreams

Willamina

Rise and shine, Willamina! We know how you love snoozing in your cozy bed. But you’ve been at the ASPCA Adoption Center for over a year, and we’d like to find you the perfect forever home. We just need you to wake up so we can introduce you to potential pet parents.

When she’s not getting her beauty sleep, you can find Willamina grooming her feline roommates in the cat habitat. At first glance, though, the lady can seem a bit shy with humans. "She falls under the radar for most people, but she would be perfect for someone who is looking for a companion animal who isn’t too much trouble," says Milagros Rosario-Summers, ASPCA Facilities Assistant and big fan of the three-year-old tabby.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: You Gotta Have Friends

Christopher

Christopher is such an amiable fellow that Katie Watts, ASPCA Senior Feline Behavior Counselor, often employs him to interact with other cats and determine whether they can live in a habitat with cat-mates. “He adores other cats as much as he loves people!” Watts says.

This cuddle bug has been around the block when it comes to medical issues. Before Christopher came to us last October, he was mistaken for a female—the truth came out during an aborted spay surgery! He’s also missing most of his teeth, is on a special diet for colitis and, if that weren't enough—we removed a benign tumor from his ear. “But he's good as new now and doing great!” Watts reports.

As you can see, kitty could use a break! At eight years old, Christopher is more than ready to settle into his forever home. “He's a laid-back guy who loves cuddling and attention. He’s perfect with other cats.”

Got spare room on your lap and in your heart? Please consider filling the void with the sweetest cat we know!  If you’d like to meet Christopher, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.  To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Work It, Baby!

Brianna

We first met Brianna in 2001, and found her a nice home with a great family. Unfortunately, the shepherd mix was returned to us this past January due to a child’s severe allergies. It’s been a long time since Brianna lived in a kennel and tried to woo potential adopters, but at seven years old, sistah still knows how to work a room!

How does she do it? After she shows off her elegant, feminine ears, Brianna prances over to you for head rubs and kisses. She loves tossing around a ball, but she’s happy to drop it for a taste of a delicious treat!

Brianna needs to go home with an experienced pet owner who can help her heal and get over certain fears. “She recently had surgery on both her knees, and she’s scared of thunder and other loud noises,” explains Doug Becker, Volunteer Dog Captain at the ASPCA.

If you’re interested in adopting Brianna and giving her some new digs, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.  To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Cuddle

Dog

It’s a sad sight to behold—a creature as large and grand as a Saint Bernard, neglected to the point of skin and bones. Such was the plight of poor Precious, rescued by our Humane Law Enforcement team in October 2008. The happy news is that now Precious is as beautiful and majestic as she was meant to be.

“She would be that perfect partner for snuggling and watching old movies on TV with a bowl of popcorn,” says Senior Manager of the ASPCA Volunteer Program, Diane Wilkerson, with adoration. Don’t be intimidated by her size! “She is a strong girl but can be such a gentle giant. She loves to have her head scratched and her belly rubbed.”

Precious is seven years old and has hip dysplasia and arthritis in her hips and spine, which give her a bit of a wobbly gait. She is also under treatment for skin and ear infections. She will need a special family willing to continue her medical care. If you’d like to adopt Precious and erase the memories of her unhappy past, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.

15 Minutes of Fame for 5 ASPCA Mutts

Line of the day: “He peed on my foot and I’ve had that warm feeling ever since!” Those were Julie Raposa’s words when introducing her dog, Sam, on The View this morning.

Whoopi

Host Whoopi Goldberg (as if you didn’t know) with Siren, ASPCA mutt available for adoption.

The View held its first Mutt Show, in which ten mixed-breed dogs were showcased. Five of the contestants were dogs owned by viewers, and the other five were dogs available for adoption at the ASPCA! We think it’s great that all of the ladies of The View have dogs at home, except for Whoopi, who has a cat—and a “granddog!” If you saw the episode, OMG, how cute was that segment of Joy’s mutt getting booted from Westminster?

Speaking of the high society of dogville, Westminster’s David Frei judged the dogs on appearance and temperament. He selected the ASPCA’s Eggy, a seven-month-old Dalmatian mix, as “best in show” of the adoptable group. Eggy was then up against Pete, viewer Jill Altruda’s pooch, who took home the grand prize. But that’s okay—as Frie put it, all the ASPCA dogs will be winners by having someone adopt them.

Get a Load of Our Own Best in Show!

Candace Bergen

That’s right! We had our very own talent show here at ASPCA headquarters on February 13. Eleven canines, all available for adoption at the “A,” and their handlers showcased their talents  for a panel of celebrity judges that included film and television actress and ASPCA supporter Candice Bergen (pictured), high fashion model and AIDS activist Maggie Rizer, President and Founder of DeLuca Dog and Friends, Greg DeLuca and ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Assistant Director, Joseph Pentangelo.

The dogs were judged on several criteria, including overall presentation, dog’s attentiveness to the handler and creativity of the commands learned.

Super Tiger earned first prize, winning the judges over with his ability to crawl, attend “spinning class” and—undoubtedly his fave—take a nap on cue.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Persian Empire

Cat

It’s hard to believe that someone would hurt any animal, let alone a beautiful Persian kitten. Indeed, Atosa had a rough start in life, but once she was rescued from an abusive situation by ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Special Agent Lai, her road to recovery began.

Unfortunately, Atosa had to have a leg amputated as a result of severe fractures, but that doesn’t stop her from taking charge. Now a year old, Atosa will let you know when it’s time for affection, when it’s time to play—and when she needs to be left alone, thankyouverymuch.

“Atosa is a social cat, although she appreciates attention on her own terms,” says Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. “She wants and demands to be in charge, although she does have her sweet, affectionate side when she's in the mood. “

Atosa loves toys and needs plenty of play time throughout the day. Not willing to share the spotlight, she must be the only pet in the household. (With looks like that, can you blame her?) This pretty Persian is on a special diet and would do best with parents who have cat experience.

If you want to become hypnotized by Atosa’s spellbinding eyes—one blue and one yellow!— please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Mr. Daisy is fat. We're not going to try to dance our way around that one. But boy, can he move! It isn't every day you meet a cat who can get his groove on. He prefers old jazz standards—when he hears one, he can't resist rolling around in harmony with the music. See for yourself in the video below!

"That's him—Mr. Lover Boy," agrees Katie Watts, ASPCA Feline Behavior Counselor. According to Katie, this amazing cat loves everyone, and could fit in just about anywhere. Well, maybe not literally fit just anywhere! Mr. Daisy is a mushy, cuddly companion, and would likely be great with small children or other cats. "He's pretty much perfect all around, although he does have some medical issues," says Katie. "He's on a special diet for urinary issues."

So, if you're interested in slapping on a chauffeur hat and driving Mr. Daisy—were you waiting for that?—home, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are looking for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

Get Your Votin’ Paws Pounced…

You know us, we love to promote pit bulls. After all, someone’s gotta spread the word about what loving, loyal, delightful, devoted pets they make! This past Sunday, the ASPCA officially launched the year-long ASPCA Adopt-A-Bull Contest—sponsored by the New York-based Animal Farm Foundation—for shelters and pet parents who’ve made successful adoptions of pit bulls using the ASPCA’s Meet Your Match program.

Throughout the year, we’ve introduced you to our quarterly winners—and now it’s time for YOU to cast your vote for your favorite couple. The pet parent-pooch duo who receives the most votes in our online contest will win a photo shoot with a professional photographer and a bronze of their top dog, and the winning shelter will earn a $5,000 grant and a trip to New York City. Cast your vote now!

And the finalists are:

Wanda

Elizabeth and Wanda
SPCA of Wake County
Elizabeth Bartow—a shelter volunteer at the SPCA of Wake County in Raleigh, NC—met her match with Wanda, a Life of the Party pit and “fetch-playing freak.” Says Elizabeth: “Wanda’s a wild woman, but we’re incredibly in tune. If I’m having a bad day, she sits with me for hours. If I’m having a great day, she butt-tuck boogies all around the yard!”

Lola

The McIntosh family and Lola
Humane Society of Silicon Valley (HSSV)
When Lark McIntosh started her search for the perfect family pet, she didn’t know the color orange would lead to Lola—a sweet-faced pit at Santa Clara, CA’s Humane Society of Silicon Valley. Thanks to MYM, Lark knew Lola was “more than just good looks.” She’s a pooch who loves to go on hikes and “help” in the garden. Says Lark: "Lola is my best friend. We’re connected at the hip, and I know I need her as much as she needs me.”

Elsie

The Torbin family and Elsie
Western PA Humane Society
When Becky Torbin met, matched with and adopted Elsie from the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, her husband was reluctant. Now it’s safe to say he’s been won over completely by the nine-year-old pit bull, who helped him get through chemotherapy and safely into remission. "She would lie across his chest as he slept on the couch after his treatments," says Torbin. “Elsie was truly the best medicine he could ever ask for.”

Gunther

Rebecca and Gunther
Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM)

Gunther had a bad case of mange when Rebecca met him at Humane Society of South Mississippi, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the pup, who just happened to be deaf. Rebecca decided to adopt when first they were identified as a MYM match, both orange, and later “that week, in a Mutts comic, a white dog was portrayed as saying, ‘I know I'm deaf, but I'd still make a great companion. Just do like I do, listen to your heart.'"

ASPCA Pet of the Week: A Cuter Pup Than Brooklyn? Fuhgeddaboutit!

Dog

Brooklyn is only eight months old, but this pit bull mix has already been unlucky in love—she lived in two homes and was returned twice, both times for reasons that weren’t her fault. Now all she wants is to set down roots—permanently. “Her sweet nature will win your heart in a jiffy,” says Trish McMillan, ASPCA Director, Animal Behavior. “Brooklyn is a very smart, super-affectionate, wiggly young girl who would love to live in an active home with people who will take the time to train her.”

Like all true New Yorkers, Brooklyn is a fast learner. She already has a good start on obedience training. She will need her new pet parents to take her to puppy obedience classes to make sure she lives up to her superstar potential! Any athletes out there? Brooklyn would make a great running partner. She would do best in a home with no other dogs or children, since her enthusiasm and energy will require lots of attention.

To give Brooklyn your all—and get a whole lot more in return—please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Lover Boy

Morris

Chivalry isn’t dead, thanks to a four-year-old orange tabby. Meet Morris. Ever the gentleman, he believes in old-fashioned romance. Head rubs are permitted on the first date, but he is the type to court his adopter before he takes the relationship too far—you know, rolling over on his back and purring.

And just like some modern-day lover boys, Morris gets cold paws just before he’s greeted at the door. “He’s a little nervous in new situations, but very sweet,” says Katie Watts, Feline Behavior Counselor.

But don’t worry—he won’t love you and leave you. Morris isn’t interested in playing the field. All he wants is to settle down in a “quiet household, with someone who wants some cuddle time.”

If you think you are a match for Morris, please call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120. To see other animals who are waiting for homes, please visit the ASPCA Adoption Center online.

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Put on a Happy Face

Opel

Is that a winning smile or what? We bet that Opel is probably thinking about meeting a special family that's ready to make a lifetime commitment. A one-year-old shepherd mix, Opel was returned to the ASPCA because her owner moved and could not take her along.

Our behavior staff dubbed Opel as Life of the Party. That means she’s loads of fun, with brains to match! “She’s very eager to learn for a taste of her favorite treat!” said her former owner. “She knows her basic commands, like ‘down’ and ‘sit,’ and she has no behavior issues.” Opel loves to play with other dogs and get lots of exercise while on the town.

We’re thrilled to report that, as we went to press, Opel found a great new home. You
go, Opel!
But there are other great dogs just like her waiting for you at the ASPCA Adoption Center online.
